John Edwards to Announce Next Week in Iowa

Rumor had it that John Edwards was going to announce his candidacy for President last weekend in New Orleans, but it didn't happen.

The Des Moines Register says it will happen next week in Iowa.

Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards plans to announce his candidacy for president next week during a nationwide swing scheduled to include a stop Thursday in Des Moines, Democratic activists in early nominating states said.

The plans indicate that Iowa's lead-off nominating caucuses could be competitive, despite home-state Gov. Tom Vilsack's candidacy for president.

By getting into the race before year's end, Edwards would pre-empt announcements by prospective Democratic candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, on whom national news media attention has focused in recent weeks.

I'm glad. I don't think Vilsack has a prayer and if he doesn't run away with his home state, maybe he'll drop out quick. As to why Edwards is choosing Iowa:

By getting into the race before year's end, Edwards would pre-empt announcements by prospective Democratic candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, on whom national news media attention has focused in recent weeks.

In 2004, Edwards' theme was poverty. He's going to address the war this time around:

"Edwards has had the guts to say his vote for the war was a mistake. Democrats are hungry for that kind of truth," said former Woodbury County Democratic Party chairman Al Sturgeon, who supports Edwards. "He also has something progressives want: hope."

Last I heard, Edwards is still set to announce in the last week of January in the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans. He will then be heading to Iowa and several other early-primary states as part of little post-announcement tour. The article linked to doesn't actually say that he'll announce in Iowa, so I believe his original plan of announcing in New Orleans is still on.

John Edwards, only addressing issues after they stop being controversial.  Taking a tough position and fighting for it may mess up his hair.

Lacking the experienced insight, lacking the fiery chops born from struggle.  He is, in a word, soft, in every possible way.

...member of his family to attend college, a self-made multi-millionaire attorney, and he lacks the fiery chops born from struggle?

I rarely disagree with you Dadler but, respectfully, I must disagree with you here.

That STILL doesn't mean he would be the best candidate but give credit where credit is due.
